                                              Seventh Grade
                                              - a short story by Gary Soto

                                              Points of Focus:

How do you make a good impression?

                                              Literary Analysis: Plot

                                              - A plot is what happens in a story, and usually consists of five stages:
                                              1. The exposition introduces the characters, the setting, and often the conflict, or struggle between forces.
                                              2. The rising action shows how the conflict gets more complicated.
                                              3. The climax is the moment of greatest interest.
                                              4. The falling action and resolution reveal the outcome.

As you read "Seventh Grade," notice how the events in the story lead up to the climax.

Please begin reading the story on page thirty-two.  We will stop to discuss as we read.

Homelink Assignment: (record in your planner, please)

Write a paragraph about what things were like for you during your first few days of seventh grade.
Include at least three vocabulary words (that we've studied today).  Here is a sample of how you might begin your paragraph.

                                              Example:
As I walked up the school steps that first day, I just wanted to linger outside the door forever.

Every complete sentence has a subject and a predicate.  The complete subject includes all the words that tell whom or what the sentence is all about.  The complete predicate includes the verb and all the words that go with it.  If a sentence is missing a subject, a predicate, or both, then it is a sentence fragment.  The missing part(s) must be added in order to make the sentence complete.

For those of you who would like a challenge, try to create an animoto.  Do you remember the novel trailer Mrs. Klein put together for Walk Two Moons?  Try making your own.  You could either:

                                              - make an animoto as a book trailer for Seventh Grade
                                              - make an animoto to briefly define the six vocabulary definitions described above
